30 April 1980, a six strong Iraqi-sponsored terrorist group burst into the Iraninan embassy in Princes Gate, London taking more than 20 people hostage. B Squadron, 22 SAS was within hours of the siege commencing and began developing plans to break into the embassy and free the hostages. A high ranking group of government officals decided the best course of action was to negotiate with the terrorists so the SAS was kept on hold, rehearsing and preparing for the assualt. This continued for 5 days until the terrorists patience cracked and they shot dead the embassy press attache, Abbas Lavasini.
Prime Minister Margret Thatcher ordered the SAS to storm the building. At 1907 hours the police handed over responsibility to the SAS. 14 minutes later the SAS assualt-Operation Nimrod began. Five of the six terrorists were killed and 19 hostages were saved. (I'm sick of writing) Heres an ok digram of the op [link] and a nice photo [link] .
